FARMINGTON, NM (KRQE) – Activists want the feds to stop giving oil and gas permits in northern New Mexico until an environmental study is done.

The groups say drilling and fracking threatens wildlife, water and air in the Farmington area. The Farmington Daily Times reports the Bureau of Land Management plans to issue a formal response soon.

There is also a challenge against fracking taking place in federal court in Albuquerque on Monday.

Mora County became the first county in the country to outlaw fracking. The federal government sued saying the ban is unconstitutional. A federal judge in Albuquerque will decide if that’s true. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
