ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A South Valley store clerk explained in a 911 call why he opened fire, unloading his entire magazine on two robbers.
“Some guy came in with big machine guns and they took everything from me. So I had to get my own gun and I shot back”, the clerk said.
The clerk, whose family owns the Pajarito store in the South Valley, says the two armed robbers forced his family to the floor and pointed a gun at them. He opened fire on the robbers as they fled in their getaway car.
Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Deputies say the suspects, Ruben Lucero and Chris Garza, crashed nearby. In the 911 tapes, deputies are heard as they surrounded the car and tried to get the two to come out.
The clerk had wounded Lucero. Garza was shot as well and was later found dead in the car. Lucero is charged with Garza’s murder because deputies say his actions led to his co-conspirator’s death.
