ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The third day of the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta was a success.
Hundreds of traditional balloons soaring along with special shapes including a blue whale while made its way up, and so did the dino baby, a new special shape this year.
Later in the morning, there was a flying competition where pilots dropped beanbags on x’s the middle of the field. There was a little bit of a mishap during the competition when the balloon named Lurch, piloted by Mike Bauwens of Park City, Utah, started on fire.
Witnesses said Bauwens was able to land quickly and then lift off again to finish the competition.
Balloon Fiesta officials said Bauwens’ balloon is a racing balloon and has a much smaller throat, so it’s not all that unusual for fires like this to happen. It’s unclear if Bauwens will be able to fix his balloon in time for other competitions.
Tuesday’s Balloon Fiesta dawn patrol is scheduled for 5:45 a.m. Tuesday with another flying competition at 7 a.m. A chainsaw carving competition will follow at 8 a.m.
