ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Yvonne Sanchez and her Lobo women’s basketball team started practice Monday. They also welcomed Ebony Walker back. The redshirt senior center is hoping to finally have a full season in cherry and silver.
It was all going so well last season. Walker, who returned to her home state after transferring from Texas Tech, was back on the court.
The 2010 New Mexico High School Player of the Tear was making a difference, averaging more than 10 points and nearly 6 rebounds per game for the Lobos.
Then a freak accident happened three games in. An Achilles tendon injury ended Walker’s season, but, did little to dampen her spirits. She saw it as an opportunity to learn.
“I learned a lot,” she said. “I watched. I saw what needed improvement not only with myself, but with the team.”
With her health intact and an education from the bench, Walker is ready to make an impact.
“This year, I want to be an impact,” she said. “I want to be the big guy they need and just help them win.”
Since Walker sat last season, she is still working on her fitness, hoping to exceed her level of play before injury.
“I worked on footwork and I am getting my physicality back as well,” Walker said.
