Huge tortoise wanders away from local pet store

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – Animal shelters are used to taking in dogs and cats but a rare stray they got last week has been drawing quite a bit of attention.

It’s no wonder – the shelter learned Monday he has been a long-time attraction at a local pet store.

Ben Swan, spokesperson at the Santa Fe Animal Shelter, said someone brought in the African spurred tortoise Friday, and he has been the center of attention ever since.

“Of course, everybody loves the unusual and this is a pretty unusual guy,” Swan said. “You wouldn’t think it, but a guy like this has a big personality.”

So, it wasn’t a huge surprise to learn Henry’s home is actually Jurassic Pets, a store with some exotic animals near Cerillos and St. Francis, where Henry has been a popular attraction there for the last ten years, according to the owner.

“The door was open and they said, ‘Watch out for the tortoise,’ and the next thing they know, he was gone,” Swan said.

The owner believes someone must have found Henry roaming the parking lot.

The escape artist will spend one more night at the shelter before going back home to the pet store Tuesday morning, where he’ll likely continue to show off his big personality.

The owner said tortoises like Henry can live for about 75 years. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
