Concerns about future WIPP leak emerge

U.S. Secretary of Energy to visit WIPP

CARLSBAD, N.M. (KRQE) – There are new concerns at WIPP that there could be another radiation leak.

Investigators say the barrel that leaked in February had a glove with lead in it.

The contents of that barrel are similar to another barrel still at the plant in an unsealed area.

Officials investigating the incident said it’s still not known for sure if the glove caused the reaction, but it’s a possibility.

The plant has been closed while the leak is investigated. The goal is to have it back open in 18 months. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
