CLOVIS, N.M. (KRQE) – A traffic stop caught on tape could land a police officer in trouble. When Clovis Police pulled a truck over last month, the driver’s boyfriend, George Corona, asked Ofc. Brent Aguilar why they were stopped. Then, things escalated.

Ofc. Aguilar: You’re not driving, bro. You got ID?

Corona: No. Why you stopping us?

Ofc. Aguilar: Let me have your ID.

Corona: Why you stopping us?

Ofc. Aguilar: Let me have your ID.

Corona: Why you stopping us?

Ofc. Aguilar: I’m going to ask you one more time, and I’m going to put you under arrest. Let me have your ID.

Corona: For what?

Ofc. Aguilar: Step out of the car.

Corona stepped out and the officer handcuffed him, saying he was under arrest for concealing his identity.

Corona: I didn’t conceal ID. You didn’t even ask me what my name was.

Ofc. Aguilar: I asked you for your ID.

As to what happens next, it depends on who you ask. Ofc. Aguilar accused Corona of resisting arrest after the two fell to the ground, but Corona’s attorney, Dan Lindsey, said the officer is the one who should face criminal charges for the assault and battery of his client.

Lindsey said Ofc. Aguilar slammed Corona onto the ground, fracturing his cheek.

“It is a classic case of abuse of authority,” Lindsey said. “Classic case of bullying by this officer.”

Lindsey said the incident cost Corona thousands of dollars in medical bills he believes the police should pay.

Clovis Police said it has launched an Internal Affairs investigation into the traffic stop and that Aguilar will be on desk duty until it is complete.

Lindsey said his client is considering legal action if police don’t take responsibility, and he has asked State Police to investigate the officer for criminal charges.
