ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Prepare for the back-ups as a busy stretch of Paseo del Norte is shutting down for the weekend for one of the longest consecutive closures since the I-25 interchange project started.
It has been exactly one year since crews broke ground on this project. It’s about 65-percent finished now and crews are working to get as much done as possible before Balloon Fiesta.
Beginning on Friday Paseo from I-25 to Second street will be closed to drivers in both directions. Drivers will still be able to exit I-25 and go east on Paseo or enter I-25 north off of westbound Paseo.
Construction crews will be working to realign westbound traffic on Paseo, the new path will take drivers on an overpass above Jefferson. Crews have already completed the eastbound overpass above Jefferson.
There will also be a lot of work this weekend such as fitting girders for the flyover.
Another big closure the Department of Transportation is warning about; drivers on westbound Paseo won’t be able to access Jefferson starting Friday night. That closure should remain in place for 30 days.
This weekend’s closures were supposed to happen over Labor Day weekend but there was a problem with the framing of one of the pillars of the flyover so work was postponed.
