Balloon Fiesta special shapes sure to steal the show

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – It is only one month away from the start of Balloon Fiesta and the biggest crowd pleasers are always the special shape balloons.

This year Balloon Fiesta attendees can expect some of the new special shapes to steal the show and it will be the debut for 12 of them at Balloon Fiesta.

Dino just hatched this summer and is ready to come out of his egg. There’s a new flying frog, a snail, a blue and a black whale with the biggest smiles across the sky.

Kids are sure to love the pirate ship, aquarium and kitty. New Mexicans will likely enjoy seeing the state bird.

“Being from New Mexico, I’d be very surprised if the roadrunner doesn’t come out to be the most popular,” Don Edwards said.

Many will even get to see the giant version of a special United States treasure. One of the special shapes, a penguin, started out on paper but soon it will be flying high over the Duke City.

Puddles is the lightest special shaped balloon ever made weighing in at just 154 pounds.

“A regular balloon will weight approximately 225-250 pounds, and a shape can be 600 up to 1200 pounds. For example the Daisy is 1200 pounds,” Edwards said.

Even though many of the special shapes are making their debut, participants can expect all of the old favorites to return.

“This year we’ve got shapes coming from the United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany, France, Brazil, and we’ve got quite a few coming from the United States,” said Edwards.

While Thursday and Friday of Balloon Fiesta is reserved for special shapes, a lot of them fly almost every day during the event.
