Luxury car company joins the space race

Land Rover, Virgin Galactic Space Contest

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A competition launched by a luxury car company could get one lucky person and three of their friends into space on a flight with Virgin Galactic from Spaceport America for free.

A $250,000 price tag means a trip to space is out of the realm of possibility for just about everyone. Celebrities, including Justin Bieber are among the more than 600 people who have already paid for a flight with Virgin Galactic.

Now to celebrate the launch of a new SUV, Land Rover has partnered with Virgin Galactic to offer the trip of a lifetime to four people. The video announcing the Galactic Discovery competition was filmed at Spaceport America. All you have to do is enter a 30 second video or a still image that captures the spirit of adventure.

According to Land Rover, a panel of judges will select a winner in December. When that winner and three friends will take to the skies with Virgin Galactic is still up in the air. A Land Rover representative says the winner will be among the first 1,000 people to travel to space with Virgin Galactic.

Virgin Galactic has indicated its inaugural flight from Spaceport America could happen by the end of the year.

Land Rover and Virgin Galactic are expecting a lot of interest with the contest. A representative says they expect to attract thousands of entries from about 40 countries.
