Shooting suspect arrested after SWAT

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A SWAT situation disrupted a neighborhood in Albuquerque for most of Sunday night.

The original call came in around 9 p.m. about shots fired near Louisiana and Oakland, north of Alameda.

“There were two shots fired off Oakand Street, a white gentleman jumped in his Mazda and took off – there were two officers in the area they responded, we believe they have him trapped over there in that storage facility and the SWAT team and they are setting up a perimeter to move in,” Louis Gallegos said.

Gallegos, who has lived in the neighbored for 10 years, said he couldn’t get back to his home because of the standoff.

Police said the man they were after shot another man in the right arm and took off. SWAT, K-9 officers and air support were called in. Negotiators discovered the man inside his home, just a few houses down from the shooting.

They said 36-year-old Eric Mechenbier surrendered peacefully and is facing a number of charges.
