Mold, asbestos found in Española school

ESPANOLA, N.M. (KRQE) – State inspectors have “red-tagged” a school building in Española.

Inspectors are asking for the facility to be vacated by Friday. The building on north Coronado Avenue houses the Cariños de los Niños Charter School and Española public schools kindergarten and pre-k program.

According to the Albuquerque Journal, inspections found shocking violations including exposed wires, asbestos, inadequate ventilation and mold.

The Española superintendent said the district is asking parents to keep children home while it works to find a new place.

The inspections followed complaints from parents. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
