Family members of hazing victims speak out

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – On Sunday, the family of two UNM soccer players who say they were victims of hazing last weekend spoke out.

One of those players was hospitalized after she became so drunk she was having a hard time breathing. Her twin sister called 91-.

They were among the five freshman, who athletic director Paul Krebs says were hazed.

Krebs said on Aug. 17 older players at an off-campus party hazed freshmen teammates by pressuring them to drink until some of them got sick. They were also told to strip down to their underwear and were sprayed with water.

UNM has handed out punishment including suspending head coach Kit Vela for one week without pay. According to a website based out of Orange County, Calif., where the twins are originally from, their family issued a statement saying in part “no person should be subjected to the type of abuse, humiliation and degradation that our daughters were forced to endure as they embarked on what should have been a momentous time in their lives.”
