UNM women’s soccer coach, players suspended

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Punishment has been decided in the Lobo women’s soccer team hazing incident.

Twenty-two of 29 players will serve a one game suspension which will come in waves. Seven freshmen on the team are not a part of the punishment. Lobos Head Coach Kit Vela will be suspended a week without pay which will start Monday. Two Lobo assistants were give letters of reprimand.

All players missed the first game against Texas Tech. It was cancelled because of the hazing incident. The new punishment will be in addition to that. The women’s soccer program will be the first at UNM to go through an alcohol education class. The team has also designed a community service program which has been approved.
