ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The state nursing board has voted down a controversial rule that has kept APS students from going on field trips.

The district had cancelled field trips pending the crucial decision from the nursing board Friday.

The board was considering only allowing nurses and health assistants to give students prescription and over-the-counter meds. Meaning if a nurse isn’t available to travel with the group on a field trip the students can’t go. That includes everything from trips to the museum to band and debate trips.

The proposal didn’t impact sports teams because athletic trainers travel with them.

Since the rule didn’t pass, it’s expected that aps field trips will resume. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
