ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Sports Promoter Michael Mckernan is hoping that if you build it they will come is true. Mckernan put $400,000 in renovations on a building at Bridge and Sunset to bring in sporting events and honor the memory of his late father Pat Mckernan who once ran the Albuquerque Dukes.

The Pat McKernan Events Center didn’t look like much when we got a first look back in May. With renovations complete, Mckernan is ready to entertain. He says monthly boxing, MMA, Duke City Derby and professional wrestling will be tenants in the building. The New Mexico Stars will also play football there.

McKernan already has contracts in place to host the first event August 30th. It’s a boxing card for a small title. McKernan is hoping to one day bring in some level of professional basketball. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
