Teen struck by lightning during football practice

A NM teen was struck by lightning during football practice.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KRQE) – A New Mexico middle school student is in critical condition Tuesday after being struck by lightning.

It happened while he was on the football field at Picacho Middle School in Las Cruces. Four other football players and a coach were also injured after lightning struck around 5:00 p.m., they suffered only minor injuries.

Las Cruces police say the teen in critical condition is between 11 and 14 years old.

He was stabilized at Mountain View Regional Medical Center and will be airlifted to a pediatric burn unit.

Police also say the lightning came suddenly and without warning.
