Groups demands reason for Brooks’ resignation

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Just days after Winston Brooks was forced out as the head of APS, a watchdog group is demanding to know why.

The New Mexico Foundation for Open Government has filed a public records request asking for the investigation report into Brooks.

Brooks resigned Friday and APS agreed to a $350,000 buyout all of which is taxpayer money.

FOG says the public deserves to know the circumstances surrounding the resignation and why public money is being spent to end his employment two years before his contract was due to expire.

APS has refused to release any information regarding the investigation which was launched earlier this month by

Board president Analee Maestas says she hired a private attorney to investigate Brooks after she says board members discussed quote “serious personnel” issues.

Sources tell us the investigation was centered on Brooks’ wife but APS won’t confirm that.

Brooks’ resignation must still be approved by the Public Education Department.

FOG says the PED should not approve the buyout until details of the investigation are released.

The school board says they hope to name an interim superintendent by Friday.
