Riot breaks out at Cibola County jail

GRANTS, N.M. (KRQE) – A jail riot in Grants is now over.

Corrections officers regained control of the Cibola County Correctional Facility after inmates became unruly and attacked a lieutenant and sergeant.

Interim County Manager Bob Gallagher confirmed the riot started at 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

Around 10:30 p.m., he said guards had regained control of the jail which holds 230 inmates.

The two jail officers were able to get out after inmates covered up cameras and attempted to break the windows.

Gallagher said no officers were hurt and he plans to meet with the warden at 10 a.m. Monday. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
