ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – An accountant from northern New Mexico has pleaded guilty to stealing $1.3 million in state and federal unemployment benefits.

Jason Gonzales, 41, of Velarde, and 43-year-old Gerald Archuleta of Ojo Caliente, filed false claims in the names of real people in New Mexico, Texas and Colorado.

The debit cards were mailed to a post office box where they picked them up and later cashed them in.

Monday, Gonzales pleaded guilty to all six counts against him including mail fraud and identity theft and faces up to 120 years in prison. Archuleta has pleaded not guilty in the case. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
