Officers cleared in fatal Carlsbad shooting

CARLSBAD, N.M. (KRQE) – Two Carlsbad police officers who shot and killed a jail escapee can go back to work.

Sgt. Edward Duarte and officer David DeSantiago fatally shot Troy Kirkpatrick in June.

Police say Kirkpatrick was being taken to the doctor by corrections officers at the Eddy County Jail when he assaulted an officer, escaped and took off in a van that had the keys in the ignition.

Carlsbad police gave chase, and after Kirkpatrick crashed, they shot him. He died at a hospital.

The Carlsbad Current-Argus reported the two officers were cleared by their department this week.
