2-year-old in serious condition after dog attack

RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – The family attacked by two dogs in Rio Rancho on Saturday knew the dogs, and it’s unclear what caused them to strike a 2-year-old and his mother.

Police say two children were playing in backyard sprinklers when one of the dogs charged the 2-year-old. The mother tried to intervene, police say, and at some point, the second dog joined in the attack.

When police arrived at the scene on the 500 block of Nicklaus Drive, they heard screaming coming from the backyard, climbed over a wall and shot and killed the two dogs.

The mother and the 2-year-old were transported to UNM Hospital where the boy is listed in serious condition and the mother is listed as satisfactory, police say. An 9=year-old who was also present during the attack received a minor injury.

Police have still not released the breed of the dogs, but said they were two different breeds of large dogs.

Names of the victims have not been released.
