LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) – Authorities say a detainee at the Dona Ana County Detention Center is hospitalized in critical condition after being found unresponsive in a booking cell.

County Sheriff’s officials say the name of the 28-year-old man is being withheld until his family has been notified.

He was being held on a bench warrant for failure to appear in court.

Officers responded to the booking cell at about 6:30 a.m. Thursday where the jail detainee was found unresponsive.

The man was taken to a hospital by ambulance.

During treatment, medical personnel say they discovered a baggie containing what is believed to be heroin packed inside the man’s anal cavity.

Authorities say the baggie is believed to have leaked an overdose of the drug into the man’s system.
