Santa Fe doubles texting while driving fines.

SANTA FE (KRQE) – Santa Fe is strengthening its penalties for texting while driving. The city council voted unanimously Wednesday to double the existing $100 fine for texting, posting on Twitter, updating Facebook or other similar activities while driving.

The penalty triples if the offense is in a school zone during school hours. The city’s new penalties are stiffer than the state texting law which is a $25 fine for a first offense.

Santa Fe’s new penalties take effect August 25, 2014. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
