Rio Rancho extends red light camera contract

RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – It looks like Rio Rancho will be keeping its red light cameras and speed vans.

Wednesday night the city manager told councilors he intends to extend the city’s contract with Redflex, the company that runs the program.

The contract gives the city manager authority to approve two one-year extensions. Some councilors have been divided about the cameras, which are located at Unser at Southern and Northern.

Councilor Chuck Wilkins says the program has reduced accidents and brought in revenue but Councilor Shelby Smith, a former police officer, says the cost to taxpayers isn’t worth it.

The contract was set to expire in December.
