ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Governor Susana Martinez plans to announce her support for the expansion of the Breakfast After the Bell in the Albuquerque Public School district. She will announce the expansion as well as hand out free books to first graders on Wednesday at East San Jose Elementary School in Albuquerque.

The Breakfast After the Bell program aims to help provide school breakfast after the morning bell for low-income elementary school students. APS has been working since 2012 to give the resources for student breakfasts since an independent survey revealed that almost 50 percent of students do not eat breakfast before school. According to a release from the governor’s office, New Mexico has been ranked number one in the nation in serving breakfast to school children less well off.

Since the program has been successful with elementary schools, the governor hopes to expand the program to fund middle and high school students as well.
