ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The process of deporting thousands of illegal immigrants housed in New Mexico and other states continues, but there’s now word that many were simply released in the U.S. for budgeting reasons.
According to a Homeland Security report, some 2,000 immigrants were released to save money on flights and overtime costs for officers.
Some are blaming a lack of communication, saying for months ICE officials neglected to get budgeting information to places jailing immigrants.
The Homeland Security Department had denied for weeks that it had released so many people.
The inspector general says ICE has yet to improve its communication or budget problems, but has established recommendations to avoid future problems.
