Jon “Bones” Jones injured while sparring

Jon Bones Jones

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Those waiting on the Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier title fight in UFC 178 will have to wait. The fight has been pushed back due to an injury suffered by the Light Heavyweight Champ, Jones, at Jackson’s Gym in Albuquerque Monday.

Jones was participating in the gym’s MMA wrestling day when his sparring partner fell on him. That caused Jones to fall with his leg folded underneath him. He suffered a partial meniscus tear to his left leg and ankle sprain in two places. Jones is not sure if the injury will require surgery.

He and Cormier were originally scheduled to meet September 27th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight day has been moved to January 3, 2015. UFC 178 will go on without the pair. The UFC flyweight title bout between champion Demetrious Johnson and surging contender Chris Cariaso will now be the headliner at UFC 178.
