ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The state is seeing a rise in concealed carry permits.
The Las Cruces Sun-News reports more than 340,000 New Mexicans received permits last year. That’s nearly 60,000 more people than in 2012.
A concealed carry permit lets a person carry a concealed, loaded handgun into most public places unless notices are posted.
Gun safety experts believe the rise in permits is partially connected to recent school shootings and the gun control fight in Congress.
This year’s concealed carry numbers are on track to surpass last year’s, with nearly 197,000 New Mexicans obtaining permits in the first six months of the year.
