ALGODONES, N.M. (KRQE) – New Mexico State Police are investigating a deputy-involved shooting in Algodones.
“Dispatch sent a call out to deputies tonight of a subject firing shots here in Algodones, deputies responded to the scene…as a result of shots fired the individual was transported to the local hospital and his condition is unknown,” Lt. Keith Elder said.
Just after 9:30 p.m. Thursday, people in Algodones called Sandoval County Sheriff’s deputies about an armed man in Los Colonias in Algodones. Deputies made contact with the man and tried talking to him, NMSP said. At some point during the incident a Sandoval County deputy fired at the man.
“There was a man standing in front of the neighbor’s house across the street with his arm extended, and I heard, drop the gun, drop the gun, and nothing happened and then suddenly there were two shots fired, I could see the flashes from the gun and the person went down,” Richard Spence said.
The man was taken to UNM Hospital in critical condition. Investigators are not releasing the names of the deputy and the person who was hit.
No deputies were injured during the incident.
