Man arrested after stealing police gear

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – An Albuquerque man is behind bars accused of breaking into an undercover sheriff deputy’s car, stealing his gear and then selling the stolen stuff at a pawn shop.

According to the criminal complaint, 25-year-old Filbert Romero Jr. punched out the window of the car at the Ladera golf course on the west side.

Some of the items taken included a Taser, police radio, two Glock magazines, handcuffs and a bulletproof vest with “sheriff” written on the front. Police later found the vest stuffed behind a bus bench.

APD’s pawn shop unit notified the sheriff’s office about some of the other items at a pawn shop near UNM.

The items Romero allegedly took were worth more than $2,500. He’s facing several charges including auto burglary.
