GRANTS, N.M. (KRQE) – It appears a blown tire began a fatal chain reaction crash between three semi trucks Wednesday morning west of Albuquerque.

Sky News 13 captured the aftermath on Interstate 40 near Grants. State police say a truck hauling passenger cars had a front tire blow out.

The semi then crossed the center median from the eastbound lanes, hit a guardrail and rolled. Another big rig heading westbound avoided the wreck but was then rear ended by a fuel tanker.

The driver of the tanker was ejected and killed as the two trucks erupted in flames. Officials are not releasing his name until his family is notified.

The crash caused a huge backup for much of the day, but as of 7:00 p.m. all lanes of I-40 are back open.
