County strongly opposes marijuana legalization

ROOSEVELT COUNTY, N.M. KRQE) – One New Mexico county wants to make it clear it is against the legalization of marijuana. Tuesday night the Roosevelt County Commission passed a resolution stating their opposition to any efforts by the state to legalize the drug for recreational use.

Commissioners say the vote was prompted by citizen concerns. They say citizens have spent the last few weeks gathering hundreds of signatures on a petition against legalization.

The commission also looked at crime and traffic crash statistics following the legalization of marijuana in Colorado.

They say the numbers are up showing them the problems created by legalization far outweigh the monetary benefits for the state. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
