Library needs help identifying 100-year-old photos

PORTALES, N.M. (KRQE) – Hundreds of photos, some 100 years old, have been found in file cabinets at Eastern New Mexico University. The photos depict people from the early 1900’s.

One picture shows a group of women all dressed up, bonnets and long dresses in tow. Another shows a few men relaxing in what looks like a dated garage.

But there’s a problem. The ENMU library doesn’t know who is in the photos or where they were taken.

“I believe that says Kiwanis Club and that one FFA behind there I think, but I have no idea,” said ENMU Catalog Librarian Debbie Lang.

The library’s special collections department has been archiving pictures for nearly 40 years.

The alumni department and donors typically send the library old photos to archive, but they usually have names and dates already on them, these don’t.

“It just has the pictures, but they didn’t have the name or the names of the people in the picture,” said Lang.

Librarians have set-up a special display to showcase a number of the historic pictures.

They’re hoping the public can help them identify the mystery people in the mystery photos.

“If you have 30 minutes or an hour, come look at photographs and see if they’re anyone you know,” said ENMU Special Collections Librarian Gene Bundy.

The display is open to the public until mid-August.

If you do know someone in one of the photos contact the ENMU library.
