Group hands in 16K signatures for reduced pot penalties.

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A group pushing to have pot penalties reduced in Albuquerque has turned in 16,000 signatures to the city in an attempt to get it on the November ballot.

The proposal would make the maximum penalty for having less than an ounce of pot just a fine, not jail time.

The group needs more than 11,000 signatures to get it on the ballot.

Even though they’ve turned in 16,000 it’s not a done deal yet because the city clerk has to make sure what they’ve turned in is legitimate.

There’s a similar pot penalty push in Santa Fe. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
