ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Literacy doesn’t take a summer vacation.

Wednesday kids from all over the metro were encouraged to read and learn more during the summer months.

Mayor Berry and his wife Maria kicked off Summer Fun Literacy Camp.

Fifty students are participating in the program which includes reading, watching educational clips and learning new vocabulary words.

The camp is hosted by the City of Albuquerque in partnership with Youth Development Inc, Americorp and New Mexico PBS.

Children tend to slack when it comes to reading during the summer, making it harder on them when school starts back up.

The kids also went home with a free book. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
