LOS LUNAS, N.M. (KRQE) – They’re more important than you think, and now storm drain grates are disappearing in Los Lunas.

This is something that is posing a danger to the public.

In the last two weeks, the village says someone has stolen five grates in the Los Morros Business Park area near the Walmart distribution center and the Rancho Valencia and Fiesta subdivisions.

Officials say the crooks are likely stealing the grates to sell as scrap.

Once the grates are removed, the storm drains become exposed and can easily become clogged during a rain storm. Officials also fear someone could fall in.

“If somebody is riding a bike or walking through, they can fall in there, and in the same case if someone gets a blown tire or something happens to a vehicle or if the vehicle goes into that it’s going to have some damage to it,” said Jason Duran of the Village of Los Lunas.

So far, the city has spent $2,000 replacing the grates. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
