ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – University of New Mexico head football Coach Bob Davie is optimistic about the 2014 season. His team will have to play their way into the hearts of media and fans to make them feel the same way.

They finished 3 and 9 last season and 1 and 7 in the Mountain West. This year’s Mountain West preseason football poll has the Lobos finishing 5th in the Mountain Division with Bosie State winning it all.

“There would be no real accurate way to predict where we are going to finish for people,” said Davie. “Because no one has seen the guys who are going to play for us. We got some good young players right now that I think are going to step up and surprise some people.”

Fresno State edged out Rocky Long and the San Diego Aztecs for first in the West division of the conference. The reigning Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Year is also the preseason selection.

Lobos receiver and kick returner Carlos Wiggins led the nation last year. He is also first team All Mountain West, joining Lobo offensive lineman LaMar Bratton on the list.

Utah State quarterback Chuckie Keeton was selected preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Fresno State defensive back Derron Smith is the pick on that side of the football.
