PBS features immigration issue in Artesia

ARTESIA, N.M. (KRQE) – Hundreds of undocumented immigrants are being housed in Artesia waiting deportation.

This week, PBS’s NewsHour highlighted the division between community members there about the issue.

In the PBS feature, Artesia’s Mayor Phillip Burch says he doesn’t think the facility should be used to house the immigrants.

“By and large, the community would prefer this installation not be here because we view the training law enforcement center as a place to train law enforcement people, and we just don’t feel that it’s appropriate to have it change to a detention center,” Burch said.

During the interview, the mayor said the immigrants are likely sleeping in the most comfortable rooms they’ve ever slept in, and he wants others thinking about crossing illegally to get the message that they will be sent back to their home countries.
