ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – More than 500 federal inmates sentenced in New Mexico for drug crimes could be released early over the next six years.
It would be the result of recent changes approved by the U.S. Sentencing Commission as a strategy to relive prison over-crowding.
It becomes effective Nov. 1 unless Congress votes against it.
Judges nationwide will have one year to begin holding hearings on inmate requests to reduce sentences.
Judges will decide whether the sentences will be reduced.
