Matchbox collectors gather at one-of-a-kind convention

ALBUQUERQUE (KQRE) – On Sunday, Matchbox showed off a car that’s normally exclusive to Albuquerque roads – an APD police car.

The Matchbox Gathering of Friends Convention took place in northeast Albuquerque and those who attended said they had a good time.

“I love cars,” said Russel Forest. “Can’t get a hold of a real one, what’s better than Matchbox?”

The convention is where many collectors go to find exclusive pieces for their Matchbox sets.

The APD police car maker, Eric Griego, says the one-of-a-kind design came from pictures he had taken of the patrol car.

Some visitors said they’ve been collecting since they were kids and have collections as large as 14,000 Matchbox cars.
