Cops and robbers saga plays out for Make A Wish

Make A WIsh, albuquerque, SWAT

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A 10-year-old boy woke to a special call Sunday morning: Police needed his help catching a bandit who’s been hitting banks throughout the city. It was an elaborate scenario cooked up by Albuquerque Police and Make A Wish New Mexico, and it’s a day Andrew Martines won’t soon forget.

Martines, who has Muscular Dystrophy, was sworn in as an APD officer Friday and was quickly promoted to SWAT. The youngest APD officer ever was taken through the paces Sunday morning, getting a ride in Air One before collaring the crook in Taylor Park.

About 100 APD officers helped make Martines’ day special, and many throughout the community, including Dunkin’ Donuts, pitched in as well. He was also made honorary APD Chief for the day by Chief Gorden Eden.

Martines’ mom said he didn’t sleep for days because of excitement. She also said she’s not sure how she could possibly top the wish for his 11th birthday on Monday.

“He’s wanted to do this his whole life, since he was 4, so they made it all possible and we’re just really grateful and blessed,” Tina Martines told KRQE News 13.

Andrew Martines’ wish is one of 130 that Make A Wish New Mexico will make come true this year, though reps for the organization say it’s one of the more elaborate. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
