WIPP contractor awarded by DOE

CARLSBAD, N.M. (KRQE) – The contractor that operates WIPP was awarded a $1.9 million bonus just days after the leak that forced the facility to close.

The Albuquerque Journal reports the Department of Energy awarded the company Nuclear Waste Partnership for what they call an excellent job at the facility near Carlsbad.

But some say the fire and radiation leak at the plant show the contractor failed at its job.

Federal investigations into both incidents show several operational and safety shortcomings.

The DOE says it is not revising or terminating its contract with the company. They’re contracted to operate WIPP through 2017.
