Deputies: NM mom beat daughter for being gay

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) – A New Mexico mother is facing a hate crime charge after authorities say she physically and sexually abused her daughter because she is gay.

The Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office said a 40-year-old woman was arrested Tuesday on charges of second-degree criminal sexual penetration and third-degree child abuse.

Citing a criminal complaint, The Las Cruces Sun-News reports the 17-year-old girl alleges she and her mother had been arguing about the girl’s sexuality for around a week before her mother beat and abused her.

The woman has been released on a $25,000 secured bond.

It was not known if she has an attorney.
