3 killed in helicopter crash in eastern NM

NEWKIRK, N.M. (AP) – State police say a medical helicopter that was carrying three crew members crashed in eastern New Mexico overnight.

According to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, which partners with Tristate Careflight, all crew on board were killed.

Police say Tristate Careflight lost contact with the helicopter around 2:30 Thursday morning about three-and-a-half miles north east of Newkirk.

Police contacted a landowner who sent a ranch employee to look for the helicopter. That worker found the burning wreckage on the side of a mesa.

The helicopter was flying from Santa Fe to pick up a patient in Tucumcari.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
