Frequent ambulance users to get home visits

SANTA FE (KRQE) – The Santa Fe Fire Department is now taking a proactive approach in trying to help people before they need to call an ambulance.

The department found that many medical calls are either preventable or could be handled in ways other than an ambulance ride to the emergency room.

Fire Chief Erik Litzenberg says the new program, the Community Protection Initiative, is a collaboration between the fire department the firefighters’ union and health care providers.

Now firefighters will make home visits to people who called 911 four or more times last year.

Most of them are elderly or individuals with serious health issues. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
