NM marijuana supporters call for reduced penalties

Drive thru marijuana petition
NM marijuana supporters call for reduced penalties.

SANTA FE (KRQE) – Some people in Santa Fe want penalties reduced for people caught with small amounts of marijuana.

The marijuana petition campaign was hosting a drive-thru petition drive Tuesday.

Organizers are trying to gather enough signatures to put a marijuana decriminalization measure on the ballot.

They want people caught with an ounce or less to face no jail time and they say people are backing them.

In order to place the measure on the November ballot, organizers had to collect more than 5,600 signatures.

They say they’ve collected 6,000.

The county clerk’s office will have to make sure all the signatures are from registered voters in the county.
