ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The mother of missing baby Gabriel was released from an Arizona prison on Friday and is now living with her grandmother here in New Mexico.
Baby Gabriel made national headlines when he disappeared four and a half years ago.
Mother Elizabeth Johnson was convicted of charges related to his disappearance and spent those years behind bars.
Her new found freedom is re-igniting questions on where baby Gabriel is and whether he’ll ever be found.
The story captured national attention in 2009.
Johnson, who had joint custody, took Gabriel from the Phoenix area and fled to Texas.
That was the last time Gabriel was seen.
When authorities caught up with her in Florida days later, Gabriel wasn’t with her
She told police, in a story she maintains to this day, that she gave Gabriel to a couple in San Antonio, but didn’t name them.
In 2012, she was convicted of custodial interference and unlawful imprisonment of the 8-month-old child.
Prosecutors gave her the chance to tell them where Gabriel is in exchange for probation, but she did not provide them the location.
She has four years of probation ahead of her.
The terms originally had her staying in Arizona, but her parole officer amended it so she could live in New Mexico.
