SWAT suspect wanted death by cop

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – More information is being about the man who caused a SWAT standoff at Pros Ranch Market Thursday.

When interviewed he insinuated he wanted police to shoot and kill him.

Officers followed Gabriel Matthews to the store Thursday afternoon after they spotted him driving a stolen truck nearby.

Matthews ran into the store with officers in right after him. Everyone inside was evacuated.

He managed to hide out in a store freezer for a couple hours, until K-9’s found him.

In court paperwork, the arresting officers said Matthews told them he has been depressed and considered that officers could simply end his misery.

No shots were fired Thursday.

Matthews did admit to getting the stolen truck from a friend.
