ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – One of Albuquerque’s top property crime offenders was arrested twice Friday.
Police say they had been watching Joseph Cortez for about a month when they spotted him Friday morning at a local recycling business.
He’s well-known to cops as a metal thief and burglar.
Cortez later drove into a residential neighborhood where he spotted police.
That’s when he took off causing a short chase.
Cortez eventually pulled into someone’s driveway near Menaul and 12th Street and jumped out of the moving car.
The car hit the garage door and Cortez fled.
Police found him hiding inside a shed.
Police say there were several stolen items inside Cortez’s car.
He was arrested on several felony warrants but once he was at an APD substation police say he slipped out of the handcuffs and fled.
He was quickly re-arrested and is now also facing a fleeing charge.
